Pine Bluff Fire and Emergency Services, formed as a professional department on November 21, 1892, and provides fire suppression, haz-mat and rescue operations around the clock to a city that covers 45.6 square miles of primarily residential, commercial and industrial land. The response area includes the City of Pine Bluff and is located in the center of Jefferson County in Southeast Arkansas. Before 1892 the city was protected by the Merrill Vol. Hook and Ladder Fire Company.
The department’s main station and offices are located at 200 East 8th Ave. We also operate 6 other staffed stations and 1 unstaffed station at the Grider Field Municipal Airport. We operate the department with a $6.2 Million Dollar Budget.
In 2020 we responded to over 4,400 emergency calls. Pine Bluff holds a Class 2 ISO Rating and protects the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and Southeast Arkansas College.
There are 100 full-time firefighters and 2 administrative personnel. The department operates 11 Front Line Apparatus and several reserve and non suppression vehicles.
Pine Bluff, located in Jefferson County, is located 30 miles south of Little Rock and 150 Miles Southwest of Memphis. Jefferson County population is approximately 77,435 with the majority living in Pine Bluff, which is the county seat. In addition to Pine Bluff, there are five incorporated cities in Jefferson County, those are White Hall, Altheimer, Redfield, Wabbaseka & Sherrill as well as several small communities.
The City of Pine Bluff, a general law city, was incorporated on January 10, 1839 and has a current population of approximately 49,083 people. Pine Bluff is located along the beautiful Arkansas River and is known as the 'Harbor City'. Surrounded by picturesque River Delta, Timberwoods and Farmland, the quality of life in Pine Bluff remains high, with an excellent school system and an affordable housing market. Those who enjoy a slower pace and a simpler lifestyle love Pine Bluff's unique city atmosphere. Pine Bluff has a unique history to many events in our country dating back hundreds of years. Murals in our Downtown Historical District show just a hint of this unique history.
There are 885 square miles of land in Jefferson County, of which 28.9 square miles are Water Ways. Temperatures range from the January average of 43 degrees to the July average of 98 degrees. The average rainfall is 29 inches a year.
